ellipsis series

In this series I follow the Shinto Animist tradition of using elements of landscape to represent larger nature spirits. These elements both come between the observer and this nature spirit as well as stand in for it. The use of natural landscape colours accentuates this connection. I push the sense of the canvas being a two dimensional space with the use of paint layering emphasised by the contrasting intricate pencil etchings.

ellipsis, windows of other awakenings series

These “Windows of Other Awakening” series represent the Zen principal of “Satori”. There are few windows at some temples in Kyoto which are called “satori no mado”; “windows of awakening”. These paintings are part of the “Ellipsis series” in which I follow the Shinto Animist tradition of using elements of landscape to represent larger nature spirits. These elements both come between the observer and this nature spirit as well as stand in for it. The use of natural landscape colours accentuates this connection. For me, these paintings represents beautiful elements of nature. I push the sense of the canvas being a three dimensional space with the use of paint layering emphasised by the contrasting intricate pencil etchings.

spheres series

In this series I use dynamic calligraphic brush strokes that create an intricate sense with layers of paint. Zen calligraphy was my first creative education. The meditation process that precedes calligraphy has been enjoined in the creation of these pieces as well. Each painting has an individual title that interprets my emotional response to, and poetic sense of nature with colours. I also use polychromos (permanent lead) pencils to give compelling effects to the compositions.

ethereality series

Each of this series’ landscapes has an individual title. I used layers of paint on canvas to create an intricate sense on the surface. I also used polychromos (permanent lead) pencils to give compelling effects on the compositions. I enjoyed getting lost and found in the passages between the layered colours while the white paint creates an ethereal reality on the canvases.

cabinet of dreams 1 series

This series explores small rectangle scale compositions. I enjoyed the compound sense of minimalism at this scale. Some of them are related to each other as a polyptych but mostly they are individual landscape presentations.

I use layered colours to create intricate spaces with a poetic sense. The additional drawing with polychromos (permanent lead) pencils lends a playful feeling into the compositions.

cabinet of dreams 3 series

This series is based on same theme of ellipsis series as colour study in small scale compositions with the sense of minimalism. My observations of fragments of nature through Animist-Shinto meditation are the bases of these studies in colour, overlay and texture using paint layering in an almost sculptural sense.
